According to the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race website the race is ‘a severe test of skill, physical and mental stamina and planning which produces a memorable sense of achievement for those successfully completing it.’
The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race is 125 miles long and has 77 portages. The first 52 miles are along the Kennet and Avon Canal to Reading, the next 55 miles are on the River Thames to Teddington. The final 17 mile section is on the tidal portion of the Thames.
Steve Cook, independent financial adviser and member of the St Albans financial planning team said:
‘The race starts on the 31st March and we are hoping to complete the race in around twenty four hours, with our support team on hand to encourage us on. Simon and I have been training regularly on the Grand Union Canal. I have also been going to the gym twice a week and changed my diet to build up energy reserves so I can manage our training regime! It is great to be attempting such a historic challenge, and hopefully we can raise lots of money for The Alzheimer’s Society and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust in the process.’
